Short form of Alkyd Resin

Short oil alkyd resins have an oil content of less than 40%. The main advantage of short oil alkyd resins is the excellent drying time. They are mostly used in industrial paints, Anti-corrosive primers, and applications that need a good drying time.

What is Short Oil Alkyd Resin?

Alkyd resin is a polyester with a monovalent fatty acid in its structure. Oil length is defined as the weight percentage of fatty acid contained in the total Alkyd Resin. Based on oil chain length, ArChem Alkyd Resins can be classified into 3 categories as short oil alkyd resin, medium oil alkyd resin, and long oil alkyd resin. Alkyd resins are used in various industries such as construction paints, inks, furnace paints, automotive paints, etc.

alkyd resin

Oil length is an important factor in determining the qualities of an alkyd resin. The more unsaturated the fatty acid, the shorter it takes for the coating to dry. Short Oil Alkyd Resins are commonly used in combination with nitrocellulose resins, urea formaldehyde, or melamine formaldehyde in the manufacture of stove paints. Depending on the type of oil used in the structure of alkyd resin, they are used for different purposes. These resins add properties such as adhesion, resistance, and flexibility to secondary resins that mix with them.

Alkyds are classified according to the percentage of fatty acid in the resin. Short oil alkyds contain <30% fatty acids, medium oil alkyds between 45 and 55%, and long oil alkyds >55%. Long oil alkyd resin often is used in decorative coatings by combining other modified alkyd to improve durability. The short oil alkyd resin combination with melamine-formaldehyde resin can be used in automobile and industrial stoving formulations.
Some coatings containing short oil alkyd resins must be baked to form a solid film. In architectural coatings, the alkyd resin must cure through air drying; so, medium and long oil alkyd resins are suitable for this purpose.

Short Oil Alkyd Resin Advantages

Short oil alkyd resins are soluble in strong solvents like xylene or toluene and have very limited compatibility with aliphatic solvents. they have good compatibility with other short oil resins, amino resins and nitrocellulose. Some advantages of short oil alkyd resins include:

  • Good flexibility
  • Excellent gloss
  • High hardness
  • Good adhesion
  • High outdoor durability
  • Chemical resistance
  • Fast air-drying properties

Short Oil Alkyd Resin Applications

ArChem Short Oil Alkyd Resins are produced based on drying oils such as soybean oil or non-drying oils like coconut and linseed. They are used in various industries such as the automotive industry, to produce paint for metal surfaces and in the production of plasticizer agents for the protection of external building structures.

Compared to most alkyds, ArChem Short Oil Alkyd Resins have superior durability and corrosion resistance. Some of ArChem Short Oil Alkyd Resin uses include:

  • Industrial paints and coatings
  • Lacquers, stoving enamels, and paints
  • Anti-corrosion primers
  • Wood coatings
  • Nitrocellulose enamels and paints
