Methylal Production 

Methylal is produced through the reaction of methanol and formaldehyde in the presence of concentrated sulfuric acid. The resultant methylal is distilled, and unreacted methanol is separated from the product for recycling to obtain methylal with a content of 85% or more.

  • Methylal should be stored in a tightly closed container, away from direct sunlight.
  • This product should be stored in a cool, dry and well-ventilated facility away from incompatible substances.

Methylal Health Hazards


Methylal is a highly flammable liquid. Prolonged or repeated skin contact may cause dermatitis. Plus, it may cause liver and kidney damage. Some of the necessary first-aid measures are described below:

  • If inhaled, remove from exposure to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. Seek medical attention immediately.
  • In case of ingestion, never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Do NOT induce vomiting. Seek medical attention immediately. If conscious and alert, rinse mouth and drink 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water. Wash mouth out with water.
  • If in eyes, immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical attention if irritation occurs.
  • In case of skin contact, flush the skin with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Get medical attention if irritation develops.

Operators should wash their hands before breaks and after work. they should use personal protective equipment and wear chemical impermeable gloves when handling Methylal to avoid contact with the body, skin, and eyes.
