Ammonium sulfate production
Naturally, Ammonium sulfate occurs as the rare mineral mascagnite in volcanic fumaroles and due to coal fires in some dumps.
Industrially, Ammonium sulfate is produced by the reaction of ammonia with sulfuric acid:
2 NH3 + H2SO4 → (NH4)2SO4
In this process, ammonia gas and water vapour are added to the reactor. Concentrated sulfuric acid is added to keep the solution acidic. Powdered ammonium sulfate may be formed by spraying sulfuric acid into a reaction chamber filled with ammonia gas.
