Monoethylene glycol (MEG)
Monoethylene glycol is an organic compound with the chemical formula C2H6O2. It is the simplest combination of glycols. MEG is one of the most common organic compounds with antifreeze properties. This product is used in the manufacture of resins, heat transfer fluids, antifreeze and coolants, water-based adhesives, and paper and leather.
ArChem provides MEG and other raw chemical materials such as MEA, Soda ash, and LABSA for various industrial applications. Additionally, ArChem provides customers with other chemical products including Nitrocellulose, Nitrocellulose solution, organic solvents, etc. for further information don’t hesitate to get in touch with our technical sales team in ArChem.
What is Monoethylene glycol (MEG)?
Monoethylene glycol (also known as MEG) is a clear and colourless liquid with a sweet taste. It is miscible with water, alcohol, and many other organic compounds. MEG is the most important of the commercial ethylene glycols, as it has many industrial applications. Monoethylene glycol(MEG) advantages include:
- Absorbing moisture
- Preventing freezing

MEG applications
MEG has different applications in various industries. This product is commercially available in three grades: fibre, industrial and antifreeze. Some uses of ArChem MEG include:
- MEG is used for the preparation of polymers such as polyesters and polyethylene terephthalates.
- MEG is used in antifreeze formulations in cars.
- MEG is used as a cooling agent in air conditioning systems.
- MEG is also used in the manufacture of alkyd resins.
- In medicine, MEG can be used in the production of vaccines.
- MEG is used in the production of ink, adhesives, and paint industries.
- MEG is used as a solvent in formulations like shampoos, lotions, and other skincare products.
MEG production
MEG can be produced from ethylene, via the intermediate ethylene oxide. Ethylene oxide reacts with water to produce ethylene glycol according to the chemical equation:
C2H4O + H2O → HO–CH2CH2–OH
This reaction can be catalyzed by either acids or bases or can occur at neutral pH under higher temperatures.
Monoethylene glycol is also manufactured via the hydrogenation of dimethyl oxalate in the presence of copper as a catalyst.
MEG storage
MEG is rated as 0 for instability, indicating that this product is usually stable. Storage conditions of ArChem MEG are listed below:
- MEG should be kept away from heat, sparks, and open flames.
- MEG should be kept only in the original containers, in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area.
- MEG should be kept away from direct sunlight.
- MEG should be stored away from incompatible materials such as strong acids, strong bases, and strong oxidizing agents.
MEG health hazards
MEG should be handled with care, as it can be toxic if ingested or absorbed through the skin. Some of the necessary first-aid measures are described below:
- In case of inhalation, move the affected person to fresh air and keep warm and at rest in a position comfortable for breathing. Consult a doctor.
- In case of ingestion, wash out mouth with water. Do not induce vomiting. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.
- In case of skin contact, immediately flush the skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes.
- In case of eye contact, rinse immediately with plenty of water. Continue to rinse for at least 15 minutes and get medical attention.
