What is Diethylene glycol (DEG)?

Diethylene glycol

Diethylene glycol (also known as DEG, 2,2-oxydiethanol and diglycol) is a clear, colourless, and odourless liquid with a sweetish taste. It is soluble in water and many organic solvents. DEG is similar in properties to MEG (mono ethylene glycol), but DEG has a higher boiling point, viscosity, and specific gravity.

DEG is produced by the partial hydrolysis of ethylene oxide.

Diethylene glycol (DEG) production

Diethylene glycol is produced by the partial hydrolysis of ethylene oxide. It is a by-product of monoethylene glycol (MEG) production process. The process consists of the oxidation of ethylene at a high temperature in the presence of a silver oxide catalyst. The ethylene oxide is then hydrated to yield diethylene glycol with monoethylene glycol and triethylene glycol as co-products.

Diethylene glycol (DEG) storage

Diethylene glycol is stable under normal conditions. Storage conditions of ArChem Diethylene glycol are listed below:

  • Diethylene glycol should be kept away from food and drink.
  • Diethylene glycol should be stored in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area.
  • Diethylene glycol containers should be kept tightly closed.
  • Diethylene glycol should be protected from humidity, UV radiation, and sunlight.
  • Recommended storage temperature for Diethylene glycol is 15 – 25 °C.
  • Diethylene glycol should be kept away from incompatible materials such as zinc.

Diethylene glycol (DEG) health hazards

DEG contact may slightly irritate skin, eyes and mucous membranes. Plus, it may be slightly toxic by ingestion. When handling Diethylene glycol, some of necessary first-aid measures are described as below:

  • In case of inhalation, remove patient to fresh air. If symptoms persist, seek medical advice.
  • In case of ingestion, rinse mouth with water (only if the person is conscious). Call a physician immediately.
  • In case of skin contact, rinse skin with water. If symptoms persist, seek medical advice.
  • In case of eye contact, rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Call a physician immediately.

Operators should wear appropriate PPE (including gloves, safety glasses, and protective clothing). Plus, they should wash their hands thoroughly after handling.
