Nitrocellulose Grade A

In this article you are going to read more about Nitrocellulose Grade A.

Properties of A-Grade Nitrocellulose:

  • Formation of films with thermoplastic properties (heat-sealable, e.g. for coating of aluminum foils)
  • Fast solvent evaporation
  • Good blending properties with aromatic hydrocarbons
  • Good mechanical properties
  • Solve specific coating-related problems, such as:
    • Coatings dilutable with any amount of ethanol (wood polish)
    • Low-odor coatings (printing inks)
    • Gel-type dip coatings
    • Heat-sealable coatings (cellulose film and aluminum foil coatings)

Nitrogen Content

The nitrogen content of nitrocellulose is one of the main physical and chemical factors that directly influence its solubility and Thermoplasticity. The nitrocellulose that we produce, with a nitrogen content of 10.7% to 11.3%, has the designation A. A-grade NC is soluble in alcohol, esters, ketones, and glycol ethers. The nature of being diluted with any amount of ethanol makes NC Grade-A distinguishable from other grade formulations.

Good mechanical properties and good blending properties with aromatic hydrocarbons are features that are required for any color base material which are used in liquid printing inks and paper coatings. Also, the formation of films with thermoplastic properties or, in another way of saying being heat-sealable is essential for coating aluminum foils.

In addition to these, printing on plastic films and aluminum foils intended mainly for food packaging has a high sensitivity because being toxicologically harmless is a crucial factor for the food packaging industry and therefore makes NC base color formulations a favorable candidate in the food industry.

Alcoholic Grade-A Nitrocellulose

Alcoholic (damp) grade-A nitrocellulose consists of Humidity (including water and alcohol) which has a percentage weight of 30% to 35%, and water with a percentage weight of 7% at max. On the other hand, the granular form of grade-A nitrocellulose has a percentage weight of 2% of water, and the humidity part of the NC is replaced by a plasticizer (in this case, Dibutylphetalate) with a percentage weight that lies between 18% to 22%.

It is momentous to select the correct grade of nitrocellulose at your first step since this can save you considerable time and money. At ArChem company, an expert technical team can guide you to choose the best NC grade and model based on your final product application and the properties that you like your product to have.

ALCOHOLIC GRADE-A NITROCELLULOSE

It is momentous to select the correct grade of nitrocellulose at your first step since this can save you considerable time and money. At ArChem company, an expert technical team can guide you in choosing the best NC grade and model based on your final product application and the properties you like your product to have.

With fourteen years of experience importing and exporting chemical raw materials related to the paint and coating industry and using the latest product line machinery, ArChem company is pleased to provide its customers with top-level customer service and products of extraordinary quality from all around the world.

Other Properties

Moreover, some other properties, like being compatible with a wide range of binders and plasticizers, solubility and compatibility with a wide range of organic solvents, being odorless and being free of monomers, make grade-A of NC suitable to be used as printing inks. Furthermore, Grade-A of NC has a rapid and complete solvent evaporation which makes them fitted to be used as the printing ink formulation for the vast demand for high-speed printing machines available worldwide, which are more popular nowadays.

Although Grade-A of nitrocellulose can be rarely used in wood coating for specific products like matt lacquers and buffing solutions, Grade-A NC is not favorable to be used in coating formulations due to poor resistance to ethanol. Matt lacquers are added on a sealed wood surface to provide protection and a smooth finish. In contrast, buffer solutions are added and designed to create a character fit for the final coating by flattening the floor and removing any imperfections left by the drum floor sander or belt floor sander and edger.

FAQ
