What is Medium Oil Alkyd Resin?


Alkyd Resins are thermoplastic polyester resins that contain drying oils and are formed with three essential components:  fatty acids, polyols, and dibasic acids. they are classified into three categories based on their oil chain lengths:

  • Long oil alkyd resins with oil lengths greater than 60.
  • Medium oil alkyd resins with oil lengths between 40 and 60.
  • Short oil alkyd resins with oil lengths shorter than 40.

Medium oil alkyd resins have some of the same properties as Long Oil alkyd resins and Short Oil alkyd resins. They have quick-drying characteristics and high gloss.

Medium Oil Alkyd Resin Health Hazards


Inhalation exposure of vapors may cause irritation of the nose, throat & respiratory tract. If swallowed, may cause cancer, and repeated skin contact may cause skin dryness or cracking. Some of the necessary first-aid measures are described below:

  • If inhaled, remove to fresh air. Keep warm and at rest. If breathing stops or shows signs of failing, give artificial respiration. If symptoms persist seek medical aid.
  • In the case of skin contact, wash the affected skin with soap and plenty of water immediately. Remove contaminated clothing as washing proceeds.
  • In case of eye contact, flush opened eye for several minutes with water. Obtain medical attention urgently.
  • If ingested, Rinse out mouth with water. Have the victim drink 240-300 ml of water to dilute stomach contents. Obtain medical attention. Do not induce vomiting.

Operators should avoid eating, drinking, or smoking when working with materials. They should use gloves and overalls to avoid skin contact. They should also avoid breathing mist or vapors from heated material.
