Long form of Alkyd Resin

Long oil alkyd resins have an oil content greater than 55%. They are soluble in aliphatic solvents. Long oil alkyd resins are mostly used in varnishes, primers, architectural finishes, and industrial enamels.

What is Long Oil Alkyd Resin?

Alkyd resin is a polyester with a monovalent fatty acid in its structure. Oil length is defined as the weight percentage of fatty acid contained in the total Alkyd Resin.

Based on oil chain length, ArChem Alkyd Resins can be classified into 3 categories as short oil alkyd resinmedium oil alkyd resin and long oil alkyd resin. Alkyd resins are used in various industries such as architectural paints and coatings, automotive paints, etc.

alkyd resin

ArChem Alkyd resins are mostly employed as binders, adhesives, and plasticizers in surface coatings. They are made by combining polyols and anhydrides or acids with fatty or oily fatty acids in a condensation polymerization reaction.

In Long Oil Alkyd Resins, the amount of oil is more than 55% by weight and 20% to 30% of phthalic anhydride. They are dissolved in aliphatic solvents such as white spirit. Soy, linseed and sunflower oils are the most commonly used oil to make long oil alkyds. Glycerol and pentaerythritol are generally preferred as polyol sources.

Long oil resins are mostly used in architectural and maintenance areas, such as brush enamels, and marine paints. They generally have reasonable drying times and good yellowing resistance.

Alkyds are classified according to the percentage of fatty acid in the resin. Short oil alkyds contain <30% fatty acids, medium oil alkyds between 45 and 55%, and long oil alkyds >55%. Long oil alkyd resins often are used in decorative coatings by combining other modified alkyds to improve durability.
In architectural coatings, the alkyd resin must cure through air drying; so, medium and long oil alkyd resins are suitable for this purpose.

Long Oil Alkyd Resin Advantages

ArChem Long oil alkyd resin, due to its lack of brittleness and suitable adhesion, is a suitable choice for building paints and anti-rusts. In contrast with short oil alkyd resins, they have good solubility in aliphatic solvents. Some advantages of long oil alkyd resins include:

  • Good flexibility
  • Good solubility in aliphatic solvents
  • Low drying speed
  • Low viscosity
  • Highly resistant to corrosive environments

Long Oil Alkyd Resin Applications

ArChem Long Oil Alkyd Resins contain a special amount of oil which assists smooth brushing and application to surfaces. They can be used for protection of wood surfaces and corrosion prevention of metal surfaces. Some application areas of ArChem Long Oil Alkyd Resins are:

  • Metal anticorrosive primers
  • Wood varnishes
  • Architectural coatings
  • Indoor and outdoor paints

Long Oil Alkyd Resin Storage

Storage conditions of ArChem Long Oil Alkyd Resins are listed below:

Operators should use the product in a well-ventilated environment. They should use a special mask and safety gloves when using alkyd resins. Plus, they should Avoid breathing mist or vapours from heated material. It is necessary to avoid contact with eyes, skin and clothing.

Alkyd resin is produced via the reaction of fatty acids, polybasic acids and polyols. It can be classified as long oil type, medium oil type, and short oil type. Alkyd resins are the major raw material for making paint, ink, and lacquers for different applications. ArChem provides customers with all three forms of Alkyd Resins: Short oil Alkyd Resin, Medium oil Alkyd Resin, and Long oil Alkyd Resin.
