Carbon black : specifications and applications

Carbon black is a black pellet or powder material with unique characteristics. It changes into graphite if heated at 3000° C for a long time. Carbon black particles are usually spherical in shape and less regularly in comparison with graphite. These particles vary widely in particle size depending on the process they are made.

Due to the specific surface area, particle size and structure, Carbon black is used as a filler in tires and other rubber products. Plus, it is used as an additive in plastics, paints and ink pigment.

Characterization of Carbon black

Carbon black is produced in the form of colloidal particles by incomplete combustion of gaseous or liquid hydrocarbons. Some properties of this product include:

  • Its molar mass is 05 g. mol-1.
  • Its melting point is 3550 °C.
  • Its boiling point is 500-600 °C.
  • Its density is 1.7 gcm–3

Applications of Carbon black

Carbon black due to its unique properties and characteristics, has a wide range of applications in various industries. Some of the primary applications of Carbon black include:

Tire manufacturing

Carbon black is used in tire manufacturing. It is used to improve the processing, strength and durability in tire manufacturing and tire performance. About one fourth of the weight of a standard automobile tire is carbon black.

Plastic manufacturing

Carbon black is used in plastic industry. This product provides color, UV protection and conductivity to plastics.

Food industry

Carbon black is used as a food colorant when produced from vegetable matter.

Batteries

Carbon black improves electrochemical conductivity and charging characteristics in hybrid batteries, improving overall battery efficiency.

Toner and printing inks

Carbon black due to the properties like tint, blackness, and protection is used in toners and printing inks. It provides pigmentation that enhances color in various ink applications. As the particle size increases, the blackness, viscosity and tinting strength ability increase.

Carbon black production

Carbon black is produced by the incomplete combustion of coal, vegetable matter, or petroleum products. Carbon black particles are produced by the burning of fossil fuels, wood, and other biomass fuels. This process also releases carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and volatile organic compounds.

The characteristics of Carbon black vary depending on manufacturing process. The most commonly used method for Carbon black manufacturing is furnace process, and the product which is produced by this method is called “furnace black”.

In this method, natural gas is introduced into the hot furnace in the absence of air. Then, the natural gas decomposes into Carbon black and hydrogen. Finally, product stream is cooled with water and filtered.

Carbon black storage

Carbon black should be stored in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area. Recommended storage temperature for this product is 5 – 35 °C. Carbon black should be kept in properly labeled containers.

Plus, Carbon black should be kept away from heat and sources of ignition. This product should not be stored together with strong oxidizing agents or volatile chemicals.

Carbon black health hazards

Exposure to Carbon black can lead to lung disease. Inhaling Carbon black can irritate the lungs and cause coughing. Additionally, it can irritate the eyes, nose, and throat. Dealing with this chemical over many years, may lead to bronchitis and eventually to pulmonary diseases.

Carbon black skin contact may cause irritation and skin drying. In case of skin contact, wash skin with soap and water.

In case of eye contact, rinse eyes with clean water keeping eyelid open. If symptoms develop seek medical attention. Carbon black is not a chemical eye irritant.
