Sodium bicarbonate: specifications and applications

Sodium bicarbonate (IUPAC name: sodium hydrogen carbonate), is a white crystalline or powdery solid with a slightly alkaline taste. It is a salt made up of sodium cation (Na+) and bicarbonate anion (HCO3).

Sodium bicarbonate has a wide range of applications in different industries. It is used in the manufacture of cosmetics, and personal care products. In medicine, Sodium bicarbonate is used to treat indigestion and heartburn. Plus, it is used to raise flour batter as a baking soda.

Characterization of Sodium bicarbonate

Sodium bicarbonate is a white crystalline solid at room temperature. Some properties of this substance include:

  • Its molar mass is 01 g. mol-1.
  • Its melting point is >300 °C.
  • Its boiling point is 851 °C.
  • Its density is 2.2 gcm–3

Applications of Sodium bicarbonate

Sodium bicarbonate has different applications in various industries. It is affordable and due to its wide applications, it is an important chemical. Some uses of Sodium bicarbonate include:

Food industry

Baking soda (food-grade Sodium bicarbonate) is used to raise flour batter as a baking soda. It is used in the production of bread, cakes, cookies, etc. the chemical reaction helps batter expand inside the hot oven. Without baking soda, cakes and breads would fall flat.

Personal care products

In personal care products like lotions, sodium bicarbonate controls the product acid-base balance. Sodium bicarbonate is used in toothpaste in order to remove stains from teeth. Plus, it is used in deodorant, since it can neutralize acidic scents.

Medicine

Sodium bicarbonate is a vital ingredient in products used to relieve heartburn and treat acid indigestion. It decreases stomach acid, offering relief for a short time.

Cleaning products

Sodium bicarbonate is used as a cleaning agent and a disinfectant. In cleaning products, sodium bicarbonate can react with vinegar to create a solution that remove grime on surfaces and ovens. Plus, this product can enhance the efficiency of laundry detergents by increasing the water’s pH level.

Sodium bicarbonate production

Sodium bicarbonate is industrially produced by the Solvay process. Carbon dioxide combines with aqueous sodium hydroxide solution to produce sodium bicarbonate. This reaction initially produces sodium carbonate.

Then, adding carbon dioxide to the reaction produces sodium bicarbonate.

Na2CO3 + CO2 + H2O → 2 NaHCO3

Sodium bicarbonate storage

Sodium bicarbonate is chemically stable under standard conditions (room temperature). It should be kept in tightly closed containers. Sodium bicarbonate should be stored in a cool, dry, and well ventilated area.

Sodium bicarbonate should be kept away from alkali metals and acids. It generates dangerous gases in contact with ammonium compounds.

When handling Sodium bicarbonate, operators should wear appropriate PPE (including gloves, safety glasses, and protective clothing).

Sodium bicarbonate health hazards

Sodium bicarbonate is not a hazardous substance. However, prolonged using of this product may irritate eyes and skin.

  • If Sodium bicarbonate inhaled: inhalation of dust may cause irritation of the respiratory system.
  • Contact with Sodium bicarbonate: prolonged contact with skin may cause dermal irritation.
  • Contact Sodium bicarbonate with eyes: Sodium bicarbonate contact causes severe eye irritation.
